Hey, are any of you on Twitter? I just joined as betty_baker , and I am terribly at sea. It's an entirely new culture out there--have any advice on how not to fuck it up?

Fixing the link might be a good start. ^_^

I'm IAmNidoking, but I don't use it much. I watch some people's feeds, reply sometimes, and keep trying to come up with things worth saying. The past few days have been an experiment in using it more. No advice, other than the obvious - trying to follow too many people can be overwhelming.

Hee. Link fixed! How long have you been on Twitter? What's your experiment been like?

I think I only signed up a few months ago, when I found enough people who were posting things to Twitter that didn't end up in other places. (March 1st, actually, according to my records.)

I'm trying to figure out how to attract some followers, but a nobody like me doesn't have much of a chance. I would follow more famous people and reply to them sometimes, but I doubt that would make a splash, and then I'd be following too many people. I just need to be more profound and either use trending topics or just find places to post my link and get people to read it.

I've added you. I'm kaybrooke.

Um, my Twitter experience has been pretty low-key. I'm following a lot of people I know from LJ, some RL friends and family who have Twitter, news sites, and celebrities. Mostly I just respond to people I know, though. Sometimes I'm on Twitter constantly and sometimes I ignore it completely.

As for avoiding fucking up...well, I don't think there's much you can do to fuck it up because everyone uses Twitter differently. Um, basically: don't use your Twitter solely for advertising, whether for yourself or someone/thing else. Don't constantly just retweet links or stuff other people said; sometimes is good, but sending out a new RT every minute is spam. I had to unfollow an otherwise interesting person because of that once. That's pretty much it, heh.

I'm following you as @momfood; you can find people (often famous people) who tweet about what you like at http://twitter.com/invitations/suggestions

(Just a note about one of your tweets: I'm not a polyamorist; I'm polyamorous (or a polyamorous person). Polyamorist implies a dogma or boosterism that doesn't work for me.)

Oh, and you might be interested in this challenge that starts Monday. I'm going to be doing it (though I may not buy the book, if I can glean the exercises from context all right): http://www.thesitsgirls.com/2010/07/problogger-challenge/

I'm there as ladyofdragons of course.

Twitter etiquette does seem to vary by user camp but I know the one thing that tends to bug me is folks who often tweet things that are long enough to go into a journal/blog entry but make it across multiple tweets, like 5+ in a row... and then do it multiple times a day/week. I have a tendency to tune out/scroll past a lot of such instances of "tweet diarrhea", especially when it's total random stuff for which I have no care. Noteworthy things sure, that's different. Spewage of inane blather, yeah, mostly gets ignored.

Twitter comes pre-fucked-up. Relax. You can't do it any worse than everyone else already is. :)

Avoid using it? =P

In all seriousness, as long as you don't use your LJ as a dumping ground for your twitter posts, you'll be fine in my book. Use it for PR, not for your life. People get in trouble with each other when they start posting the inanities of their life or post before thinking, just like with a blog -- only in 140 characters or less.
